The Hate U Give features an emotional story of Starr Carter and her conflicts with racism and police violence. Starr watches the murder of her best friend, which sparks her commitment to speak up against police corruption and sparks her activity against discrimination and racism.

Magic of threes:

  1. Relevant & Thought-Provoking

This novel discusses popular themes of the modern 21st century culture and presents thought-provoking ideas of police violence and corruption in the United States. Thomas's novel portrays the ideology of many victims of police violence and offers and entertaining reflection of these challenging topics. The characters of the novel, especially Starr's presentation of fear and humility, offer an emotional engagement of loss, inequality, and corruption.

  2. Humorous and Engaging

Despite the discussion of controversial and challenging topics, the novel offers a humorous and well-written story. I found myself laughing several times as Starr's witty family argues and bickers together. The character dynamics present realistic and honest encountering of friendship, family, and love.

  3. Inspiring Character Development

The character development in this novel deserves five stars. I haven't felt this proud of a protagonist's development of identity and ideology in a long time. Starr learns to stand up for what she believes in, despite her initial doubts and fearful nature, and use her experiences to commit to a cause. This characterisation adds depth to the novel and engages with the audience as the reader invests in Starr's development. However, at times, I found Starr's ideas controversial and biased, which weaken her agenda and purpose of fighting against discrimination.
