When Dimple Met Rishi

Sandhya Menon ★★

This is our life. We get to decide the rules. We get to say what goes and what stays, what matters and what doesn't.

Let's jump straight into my threes with this lovely novel by Sandhya Menon!

Cute and Sweet

The love story of Dimple and Rishi is both enjoyable and cute. The novel offers a fun story that engages with light topics for all readers. While the novel offers some discussion of cultural differences and discrimination, it is limited. Therefore, if you're looking for depth and thought-provoking content, you are better off looking into a different book. The relationship and lives of Dimple and Rishi present a pleasant read, although I found a few too many clichés for my liking.

Reader-friendly

The writing in this novel is fluent and easy to read. The dialogue between Rishi and Dimple throughout the novel is engaging and the chapters divided into their different point of views is refreshing. Personally, I found myself more involved and interested in Rishi's narrative, because I found Dimple slightly unlikable. Her character displays lots of hypocrisy as she attempts to discuss feminism. Her thoughts made me feel uncomfortable as she critiques other women with an intention to make herself feel better. Her passive aggressive remarks are irksome and can become overwhelming. This definitely dropped my rating as Dimple never overcomes this arrogant character trait or aims to work on it.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the contrast of values and lifestyles that the multi-narrative allows.

Predictable

As I mentioned, clichés and overly-used reading tropes live in this novel. While the story is charming, I found its events predictable. While this adds to the relaxed nature of the novel, it can easily become a tiresome read if you're on the search for inventive story-telling.

Cheers!
