Crimson Bound

Rosamund Hodge ★★★/★

This is the human way, she thought. On the edge of destruction, at the end of all things, we still dance. And hope.

I can never resist a fantasy novel that promises romance, adventure, and a retelling of a classic fairy tale. This novel presents a unique and exciting retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.

What I enjoyed:

1. The pacing of the novel

The novel progresses in a quick pace, and the reader jumps straight into the book's action. I loved this aspect of the novel! There are rarely any dull moments, and most pages are action-packed. Hooray!

2. Characters

I always enjoy a strong protagonist, especially when they demonstrate continuous character development. Rachelle shows exactly this. She's smart and creative, and I loved seeing her grow as a person. Also, I enjoyed the wit and tricks of Eric. He presents a dilemma for the readers, as we don't know whether or not to root for him, and whether or not we can understand his actions.

What I wasn't a fan of:

1.  Character dynamics, including the love-triangle

Despite loving the character development of Rachelle and Eric's lively personality, I couldn't help notice how dull some of the character dynamics are. For instance, the romance between Rachelle and Armand lacks passion and feels in-genuine. Similarly, the love-triangle between Rachelle, Armand, and Eric feels unnecessary. I would have preferred if the romance between Rachelle and Armand would have been replaced with deepening other character developments and dynamics.

2. Rushed ending

Also, as much as I enjoyed the quick pacing and continuous action, the ending feels rushed and simplified. Rachelle is quick to switch her allies, and she is given the tools to beat the Devourer without too much trouble. I would have craved to see more inner conflict and resolution within Rachelle and a less of an obvious ending. For this reason, the novel's resolution is predictable.

Nevertheless, this is a fun and entertaining read for readers with a heart for fantasy, adventure, and new twists on the classics!
